http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/israel/8254051/Benjamin-Netanyahu-says-Palestinians-walking-away-from-peace.html
“The Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. They are not going to get an imposed settlement from the outside, it does not work. The only way to get peace is to negotiate peace," he [Netanyahu] said. That is so self serving, hypocritical and ironic, given the fact that the creation and existence of Israel was an imposed settlement from the outside, more specifically the recognition of Israel by that international body of ineffectiveness called United Nations.
I am glad to see the Palestinians are finally waking up and realizing that technically and legally they do not need the Israelis in order to establish their own Palestinian state. Their State was always there. It was only a matter of them declaring it as such. By virtue of the recognition of the Israeli state in 1948 and the establishment of its borders, the UN had consequently and simultaneously recognized the State of Palestine. There were two peoples inhabiting that entire area called Palestine before 1948; Palestinians and Jews. Does it not make sense that if the Jews were given the land we recognize today as Israel the remainder of that area by default becomes Palestine? Which brings me to the point I have been making for years. The Palestinians do not have to negotiate anything with Netanyahu and his right wing fanatics. They should immediately declare the area outside of the 1948 Israeli borders as their independent Palestinian State and take it to the UN where its recognition becomes inevitable. Hence the Middle East problem solved. The two state solution becomes reality and Netanyahu can do nothing about it. Once Palestine is recognized by the UN member states (and it will be) then it will be only a mater of time before international pressure will force the Israelis to hand over lands they took from the Palestinians illegally during the 1967 war. Yes there will be much bitching and whining by the extreme right wing Israelis (what else is new) but eventually they will abide by all the UN resolutions or risk becoming as isolated as Iran. Peace at last…and it was so easy. Just think of the years wasted trying to negotiate with Netanyahu. As the Telegraph article shows there are countries that have already recognized the Palestinian State. And there are many more who have indicated they will recognize it. So my advise to the Palestinians is don’t waste any more time dealing with Netanyahu. He is as irrelevant to your statehood as he is to the peaceful existence of Israel. He is no peace maker…he is a warmonger…always has been.

International law is real ass-backwards. How fair is it that the agressors in the 1967 war AGAIST Israel get to cry the boo-hooies when the land they lost in war isn't being returned?? Hmm?? And why is it that additionally they deserve our sympathy??
ReplyDeleteWhat lessons are learned when there are no consequences to action?? Be provacative and aggressive and instigate a war, but lose nothing as everything will return to normal in the outcome. How do we ensure then that the behaviour isn't repeated?
If I accept the premise of your argument anonymous 12,2011, 7:10 that being anything lost in war should not be given back in order to establish peace, then why are the Israelis even pretending they are interested in peace. Show their real intend which is to sell the west much unwanted bullshit regarding peace and let the chips fall where they may. Why did the allies give Germany and Japan their lands back? Why did Israel give Egypt back the Sinai why did the British give India back to the Indians? For the sake of global peace of course. Now Netanyahu is not interested in peace you know it, I know it and the Israeli people know it. I would love the West and USA to wash their hands of this conflict completely and I would be happy to have the Jews and Arabs resolve their problems without taxing the American and European tax payers with the financial cost of Netanyahu's intransigence. I am all for peace if that is the REAL intend.

There will never be peace in that region. You have one progressive democracy surrounded by dictators with a loose grip on authority and governance; who pander to their hostile populationsand contribute to the ongoing conflict in the middle east, all the while placing sole blame on Israel. The palestinians were offered dinner and dessert under Ariel Sharon's government; however no matter the concessions made and the land that was being returned, the palestinians wanted more. Why? So they could sabotage efforts to move peace forward on the basis that all conditions they require have not been met. Or perhaps in order to continue the sherade of being the victim in this conflict. Even if all the land taken by Israel during the 1967 war were to be returned, this would not appease either the palestinians, the arabs or any other players in the international community.
ReplyDeleteThe world hates Israel because the world hates Jews. Therefore the conflict will always be perceived with a bias that favours the palestinians and their syndicate.
That is so nonsense what Jan 11, 2011 8:17 is stating. "The World hates Jews". Give me a break.World Jewry used that "guild trip" on the west for years and years. Enough already. Come out of your shells and see the light. If the world hated Jews believe me it would not be the Palestinians asking for their lands back. The entire west and USA are bankrolling your defence and your economy. If the world hated you the world would have abandoned you
ReplyDeletelong long ago. The world does not hate Jews, I don't hate Jews, my friends don't hate Jews. Yes there are the crazies of the world known as Islamist extremist just like there are the white supremacist but over all the World doesn't hate Jews. But the Jews like to make the rest of us feel guilty for something a German psychopath did seventy years ago. Suck it up and move on. The Afro-Americans tried that same "guild-tripping" approach too. That didn't work well either.

In response to Ozal, I'm not a Jew, nor am I an Israeli. I'm simply a person who has observed the continual demonization of Israel in the media, by the arabs and of course the UN. Meanwhile, the groups introducing existential threats to Israel (and now the populations of many other countries) are excused with the reasoning that they are reacting to the actions of Isarel/Jews and are simply representing those whom they "oppress". It shocks me that a race, cukture and country that essentially keeps to itself, is viewed with such disdain. This is true to the extent that in defending themselves against constant attacks from the militants harboured by all their neighbours,it is THEY who are condemned rather than their attackers. And now this violence has been extended to the west on the basis of foreign policies related to Israel/Jews. There will be no peace for the people of Israel while it exists for their tormentors will not rest until Israel is destroyed...period.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I don't agree with Netenyahu and I feel he does act provacatively. but the Palestinians had many opportunities for peace under other Israeli governments. You need to question why these were repeatedly rejected and how now they can cry out "foul".
Drm P, great writing as always, and so pleased to see discourse on this article. I wasn't sure there were people capable of critical thought left after reading the comments attached to your last article.

I understand your piece and you make some valid points. However, things are not always what they seem. I am a Jew. A New York Jew nevertheless. I thought I should do the patriotic "Jewish" thing and move to Israel a few years ago. After I was there about a year Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated. That to me was a sign of things to come. In other words there are as crazy people in Israel as there are in Palestine. There are some of my people who are as unwilling to make peace with the Palestinians as the Arab fanatics. So I did the logical thing and left Israel move to Holland. I had realized that people like Netanyahu and his lot, are as bad as Ahmadinejad. I have a family and therefore not willing to risk their lives in a war torn country where the simple people on both sides want peace but the leadership on both sides want war. I left and did what Pontius Pilate did, washed my hands off this issue. Having said that I agree the Arabs had many opportunities to make peace with us before and did not take advantage of them. AS I said the common people on both sides genuinely want peace. Until such time when the leadership of both sides decided they had enough innocent blood shed in the streets and until such time as the religious leadership of both sides come out of the dark ages and move into the 21st century, peace in the holy lands will remain the illusive and unreachable dream of both peoples.
