During the cold war, ironically enough what kept us and the world safe from a nuclear holocaust, was the fear, that if the “genie” was let out of the bottle by any one nation, what would follow would be a total planetary destruction. You may think that this is a crazy concept but believe me it’s true. Known to most of us as “MAD”, Mutually Assured Destruction it was the closest thing to a guarantee that nuclear aggression would not be initiated by “us” or “them”. The basic concept being that if the USA unleashed a weapon on Russia, the Russians would unleash their weapons on us, thus causing such a nuclear domino effect, there would be no one left to claim victory. The spoils go to the cockroaches.
So they kept their eyes on us and we kept our eyes on them and we both kept our eyes on China. All parties involved took extreme measures to assure that an attack was NOT imminent from anyone at anyone. Sounds mad right? Well as “mad” as it sounds, it’s logical and it worked. It was the ultimate deterrent.

During the days of the cold war “them” were the Russians and to a lesser degree the Chinese. Now days, THEM could be anyone. Pick a country any country. Nobody likes us. Every where we turn someone wants to screw us.
Imagine for a moment, that some one, some where some how, develops a “product” which minimizes or even eliminates the destruction and effects of radiation on their own populace. My question becomes - would that someone then, be tempted to cross The Line? This is all hypothetical of course but the question remains: Would “someone” in possession of such a product be more inclined to engage in military adventurism if someone thought such adventurism was winnable? Would that be the END of “MAD” that kept us safe all these years?
I was doing my regular web surfing, trying to kill some time, giving myself something to do, when I came across this amazing article in the International Spiegel on Line – one of Europe’s best News Magazine. As always, I thought I should share it with you.

“…an American molecular biologist has developed a drug that may protect against the effects of radioactivity. Military officials are thrilled, and the discoverers could make billions...”
Here is something “light” to fill your appetite.
This is the link for the full article as it was reported in the International Spiegel on Line - by Christoph Schult. It makes for a good reading and pretty serious reflection. It did for me at least.

If this pill is true and I heard something about it on the news, what happens if it falls in the hands of places like Iran, Israel Pakistan India North Korea and other countries who are historical enemies. I think it makes it aggression more plausible.
ReplyDeleteInteresting article.

I don't think this makes a difference. If the unthinkable happens there will be so many nukes blowing up no pill can save anyone. But I see the point. It gives someone that false sense of security.

ReplyDeleteWhen they invent a pill that makes the human body withstand 10,000,000 degrees Kelvin, then you should be concerned.
Residual radiation is only 5% of the energy released in a nuclear explosion.

Kong it looks like you lost all the rednecks who were contributing to your blog. It looks like that was 95% of your followers. Believe me you didn't lose much.
ReplyDeleteInteresting article. But I think Donald Mack is right. I don't think we have much to worry about.
Let us have some debate on the economy. That's what most people care about. Thanks
