Turkey: A Democracy in Decay!

Erdogan with his newly found buddy Ahmedinejad
It seems that whenever too many conflicts start up around the world at the same time as we have today; there is always one which however important it may be…it somehow gets missed in the sand storm of events.

Take Turkey for example. A country on the verge of a socio-political upheaval or even a possible civil war and it has completely escaped the scrutiny of the international media. A country whose epidermis seems to be clear of political acne and whose economic coronary arteries are free of cholesterol. A country which by most experts’ opinion is a stable democracy with an economic growth strong enough to makes most European countries salivate with envy. So what is the problem…one would ask?

Well, the problem is that the acne is starting to break through the national epidermis in the form of social unrest and that can cause a cardiac arrest for an economy which though growing is still in its infancy. If that happens it can cause many problems, political and strategic, in a region which is currently sitting on a powder keg. Turkey’s Islamist Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, may well be on his way to becoming either the next brutal dictator in the Middle East or the next victim of the famous Turkish Kemalist Generals. Democratic Turkey is now at risk of falling into the same chaotic autocratic theocracy as Iran. The Turkish people are slowly but surely being dogmatized into an Islamic Republic and my fear is that by the time they realize what Mr. Erdogan is doing, it will be too late. During his tenure as PM of Turkey [Erdogan] has managed to systematically and methodically increase and consolidate his own powers by eliminating [purging] the secularist opposition and replacing them with his own Islamist followers mostly from the Gulenist movement. The Kemalists, who have been the protectors of the Turkish constitution since Mustafa Kemal Ataturk declared Turkey a Republic in Oct. of 1923, are finding themselves under the prosecutorial hand of Erdogan and his followers who have been put in positions of power in the military, the courts, the police, and all government institutions.

So one has to ask… “Are we witnessing the descent of Turkish Democracy or the ascent of Turkish Islamism?

Again This Is Not News…It’s a Turkish nightmare!

  1. Very nicely put. I agree. Turkey looks strong on the outside but they do have internal problems that can explode any time. I went to the links as well and they are informative indeed.

  3. Turkey will never become an Islamic Republic like Iran. Turks may be Muslims but they are too westernized thanks to Kemal Ataturk. If Erdogan keeps going the direction he is, the general will get rid of him. If not there will be a civil war.

  7. It will never happen in Turkey. There will be a coup d'etat before the Islamist are allowed to take over the country.
