McCain's Heroism...

For the last 18 months I have been following the American Presidential campaign with great interest. Since the beginning of this campaign I have been trying to find out why the American electorate is so impressed with Senator McCain's "Hero" title, to the point of Deification.
What exactly has he done to earn such title. He managed to get shot down over Vietnam...not once but twice and became a POW. OK....whoop-dee-doo!
Let's put everything in perspective. Thousands of American soldiers became POW's in Vietnam.
Thousands of American soldiers were tortured in Vietnam. Thousands more actually died. Many more thousands came back with missing limbs, and emotional "melt-downs". The reception they got from their government and the public for being forced to fight an unpopular war (Vietnam) was rejection and humiliation. McCain came back to his rich family and friends who gave him the emotional support, financial means, and governmental contacts to pick up his life and accomplish anything he wanted. He left with a silver spoon in his mouth and came back with a golden boot up his ass. He didn't make any more personal sacrifices than any of the other POW's. He didn't sacrifice his life or even risked his life to save anyone or go over and above the call of duty for his country. He was given all the financial and political help he needed to become who he is today. So PLEASE some one explain to me WHY he is such a hero? If I were a Vietnam veteran I wouldn't be feeling very proud to be an American right now....
